Director Statement
Before I decided to shoot "Blooming Night", I was considering more dramatic and convenient storytelling, but I soon realized that's not what I wanted. I have a particular obsession on Shanghai, on lonely people, on the hidden community and their hidden desires. When I lived in Shanghai I used to drive around at midnight, without a sense of destination. One time, I just stopped on a new street and that's how I found out about Lai Lai Club. I was deeply touched by what I saw, and I knew that’s what I wanted to learn and explore on screen.
