The story begins with Vince Kang, a reporter in Beijing, going back to his hometown to report on a crested ibis, a treasured species of bird that has appeared there. As the bird is pursued and hidden, everyone’s interests are revealed and their scars, both mental and physical, are opened anew. In addition, the environmental pollution, a consequence of China’s development, is brought to light.
The story, told from the perspective of a returnee, reveals the living conditions of rural China and exposes the dilemmas of humanity. In the end, Vince, the renegade, has no alternative but to make a compromise with his hometown.
